DURANT, Okla. - Midwestern State didn't have many hits against All-America pitcher Marjorie Johnson Saturday afternoon at the SOSU Softball Field.
But the Mustangs sure did make each of their hits count as MSU took advantage of a crucial error to claim a 4-2 win over No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma State in Game 1 of the Lone Star Conference North Division twin bill.
Midwestern improved to 27-14 on the season and 11-8 in divisional play, while the Savage Storm fell to 43-9 and 14-3.
The Mustangs surged ahead in the 10th inning after
Maranda Bishop's ground ball to second base was bobbled with two outs allowing Bishop to reach and Kelli Ward to score to give MSU a 2-1 lead.
Nicki Duff followed by launching a triple over the left fielder's head to beat SOSU's overshift to chase Bishop to the plate for another run before
Tabitha Yannetti ripped her 11th double of the season to right-field gap to score Duff and give MSU a 4-1 advantage.
The Savage Storm were able to scratch for a run, but MSU starter
Katie Petersen endured to improve to 13-6 on the season in a battle of pitching aces.
Petersen permitted one earned run on seven hits but proved to be effectively wild with 12 strkeouts and eight walks.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman third baseman
Mallory Mooney lined a shot over the left field fense for her fourth homer of the season.
The Mustangs logged four extra-base hits in Johnson's two starts this week which included a double by Mooney earlier this week. Johnson had allowed just three extra-base hits - one double, one triple, one homer - coming into the week.
MSU also tagged the senior with two of her three losses this season as Johnson allowed four runs - one earned - on three hits with 12 stikeouts and six walks to fall to 20-3.
Johnson tied the game with her 15th long ball of the year in the fourth inning before the teams exchanged zeroes over the next five innings.
