BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Midwestern State didn't have much going for itself in the first half of the Lone Star Conference Championship game in Bruin Fieldhouse.
Lone Star Conference South Division Player of the Year
Nolan Richardson failed to make a field goal and spent much of the opening stanza on the bench.
Then there was
Craig Green, the Mustangs second leading scorer, who also was held without a field goal.
But junior
Anthony Moore held down the fort with nine points and nine rebounds as MSU clung to a 34-29 lead at intermission before rolling to its second conference title in three years with a 66-60 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State.
"We didn't have a lot of time with this quick turnaround," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "We just had to jam things in there. The guys stayed focused and found a way to win like they have all year."
Richardson was whistled for two quick fouls while facing one of the defenders in the LSC in Abdullah Lawal.
"I wasn't frustrated about the points, but more about the fouls," Richardson said.
The fouls limited Richardson to 13 first-half minutes and allowed the more physical Moore to battle the Southwestern pressure defense.
"Anthony came in the game and he was just incredible," Ray said. "He's got some size to him and he's all for the physical play."
The 6-3, 190-pounder from South Lakes, Va. finished with 14 points and a season 14 rebounds go along with four assists
His defensive played combined with four points and an assist keyed a 12-2 run to end the first half as the Mustangs turned a five-point deficit into a 34-29 lead after Moore hit a pair of free throws to end the half.
Richardson got things started quickly in the second half when he bombed in one of three second-half 3-pointers just 34 seconds into the stanza.
Richardson, who was named LSC Tournament MVP, finished with 15 points on 4-of-11 shooting and help the Mustangs race out to a 15-point lead after
Trajinski Grigsby hit one of his three treys to push the MSU advantage to 59-44 with 7:26 to play.
The Mustangs held Southwestern off from there to earn their fourth LSC championship under Ray to include the 1999, 2000 and 2007 seasons.
Richardson and Grigsby scored 15 points each to lead MSU, while Clarke Hale paced the Bulldogs with 17 points and five rebounds.
Southwestern Oklahoma closes the season at 19-11.
Midwestern State (24-6) gains the automatic berth into the South Central Regional which will commence Saturday at a campus site.
