WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State had a double-digit in each half, but couldn't hold off Tarleton State as the TexAnns came away with a 62-57 win in Lone Star Conference South Division play Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs, who fell to 7-13 on the season and to 2-4 in the LSC South, travel to Stephenville for a return match against Tarleton State Saturday night at Wisdom Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Midwestern led by as many as 12 in the opening half before Tarleton closed to within 36-31 at intermission, but the Mustangs came out firing at the start of the second half.
Cierra Thompson canned a 3-pointer to open the second half before
Regiane Araujo converted a nice high-low feed from
Rosy Ofoegbu for layup to give MSU a 41-31 lead with 18:32 to go.
But the TexAnns would outscore Midwestern 20-6 over the next eight minutes and led 51-47 when Kelsey Benford hit a jumper from the baseline with 10:32 to play.
Sunny Sater hit a trey from the left wing to cut the TexAnn advantage to 51-50 on the next possession, but that's as close as the Mustangs would get as the teams exchanged buckets and Tarleton had the answer each time MSU cut it to a one-possession game.
Araujo and Ofoegbu had 13 points each to lead the Mustangs, while Thompson pitched in 12 points.
Ofoegbu completed a solid all-around effrt with nine rebounds and four steals in 37 minutes of play.
Sonya Sundberg paced Tarleton with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while JoAnne Jones addd 18 points and six rebounds and Shelby Adamson added 12 points.
The TexAnns improved to 11-10 on on the season and 2-4 in the LSC South.
