WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Nolan Richardson finished with just 13 points Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
But Richardson poured in seven points in an opening 12-3 salvo which included his lone dunk of the season, a runner from the baseline and 3-pointer to close out the run.
The result was never in doubt from that point on as the Mustangs rolled to an 80-59 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville to clinch their first outright Lone Star Conference South Division championship since 2000.
The Javelinas (18-9, 8-4) settled for the No. 3 seed after slipping into a two-way tie for second place with Angelo State, a 70-55 loser to Tarleton State. The Texans gained a berth as the No. 4 seed with the win.
Midwestern State opens next week's LSC Championship tournament against Cameron next Thursday at Bruin Field. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
The Mustangs clinched the division title in dominating defensive fashion and limited the Javelinas to a 34.8 field goal percentage while building a commanding 43-26 halftime advantage.
The lead would grow to a game-high 25 points after Richardson hit a free throw to give MSU an 80-55 lead with 1:25 to go.
Texas A&M-Kingsville would get no closer than 14 points in the second half.
Sophomore forward
Charlie Logan led the way for Midwestern scoring 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and pulled in six rebounds, but it was definitely an all-around effort.
Junior guard
Craig Green scored 11 points while junior
Anthony Moore turned in a solid night with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Point guard
Earl Rabb pitched in seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Robert Williams was the Javelina in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds off of the bench.
