Midwestern makes statement, clobbers Aggies 94-65

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Midwestern State was tired of being caged up at the Lone Star Conference Championships Thursday night at Bruin Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs took the aggression out on Cameron by a 94-65 margin in the first round and will move on to play Texas A&M-Kingsville, a 50-48 winner over Texas A&M-Commerce earlier in the day, Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

"We've been up here so long and were just going stir crazy," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "We were ready to play."

That wasn't a good thing for the Aggies, who had already tasted a 85-56 Midwestern rout in January.

Nolan Richardson needed just nine shots to pour in a team-high 27 points including five of the MSU's first seven points of the contest as the Mustangs didn't take much time to shake off the rust a three-day hotel layover.

"We've always got to be ready, but it also helps for me to shoot two free throws before the game even starts," Richardson said.

He knocked down a pair of charity tosses after Cameron's Terrance Welch was assessed a technical four for dunking in pregame.

The Aggies allowed to pull within 14-10 after Kallen Glasgow converted a layup with 15:41 to go before intermission, but that's when Mustangs' senior point guard Earl Rabb took over.

Spurned by only being named to the LSC South Division's second team, Rabb was on a mission.

He would dish out eight assists and pull down five rebounds while helping the Mustangs to their largest halftime lead of the season at 51-25.

"My goal is to always get my teammates involved," Rabb said. "If we can continue to play like we did tonight, I don 't think anyone can beat us."

The Midwestern lead surged to as many as 33 points in the second half after Michael Godwin punctuated a 9-2 start to the second half with a two-hand thunder dunk to put MSU up 60-27 with 16:42 to play.

From there, the rout was on.

Every Midwestern play would score and Rabb took and hit his lone career 3-pointer with 3:07 to play.

Cameron's Dave Smith scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, but it was not enough as the Aggies closed the season at 14-14.

Midwestern which improved to 22-6 on the season moves on to face Texas A&M-Kingsville in the LSC semifinals. The teams meet for the third time this season.

"We don't get any carryover points, so we need to come out and get a jump," Rabb said.

The Mustangs, who have jumped out to halftime leads of at least 17 points, hope that trend continues.

"But this time of year, you just want to win," Ray said.
