SAN ANGELO, Texas - Midwestern State just can't shake the curse of Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
Angelo State erased a 12-point second half deficit as Paige Wishuhn and Christie Rasmussen bombed in treys in the final minute of the game to lift the Rambelles to a 54-42 win Wednesday night.
"We did exactly what we talked about. We executed and played hard," MSU coach
Noel Johnson said. "I'm very proud of them. The key thing is we have one more game. The mistakes we made in this game, we'll have the opportunity to correct."
Midwestern fell to 0-8 against the Rambelles since the facility oppened in 2002 with its lone win coming against Cameron in the 2002 Lone Star Conference semifinals.
The Mustangs close the season when they play host to Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Angelo State improved to 16-10 on the season and to 7-4 in the LSC South while MSU dropped to 8-17 and 3-8.
The Mustangs dominated the opening half, holding Angelo State to 21-percent shooting and led 32-19 at the half.
The teams exchanged salvos to open the second half as Weishuhn capped an 11-2 Angelo run to pull the Belles to within 32-30 with 13:26 to play.
But Midwestern countered with a quick 6-0 run and reestablished a 12-point lead at 44-32 after
Brittny Smith converted an 8-foot pullup on a steal with 11:12 to go.
That would be the last field goal for the Mustangs over a span of 9:21 which allowed the Rambelles to go on a 12-1 run to pull within 45-44 when Weishuhn scored in the paing with 3:30 to go.
The Mustangs battled to keep the lead and appeared to take control when
Andrea Buben hit an off-balance 14-footer in the paing to give MSU a 50-47 with 1:51 to go.
Weishuhn canned a 25-foot trey from the top of the key to knot the game at 50-50 before Rosy Ofoegu muscled a shot in on a putback with 44.0 seconds to play.
Angelo State was able to corral an offensive rebound before Rasmussen buried a 3-pointer from the left wing with 19.9 seconds to give the Rambelles their first lead since they controlled a 4-2 advantage a minute and a half into the contest.
Midwestern State went to
Regiane Araujo in the closing seconds but her layup attempt caromed off of the rim and Weishuhn secured the game with the rebound with 5.7 seconds to play.
Patterson paced the Mustangs with a career-high 13 points to go with six rebounds, while Ofoegbu finished with 12 points.
Camille Perkins paced the Rambelles with 15 points, while Weishuhn added 12 points and four rebounds and Rasmussen had 10 points and five rebounds.
