DENTON, Texas - Midwestern State looks to build on its nine-game winning streak when the Mustangs take on Texas Woman's Unviersity tonight at Pioneer Field.
Fresh off of consecutive tournament titles at the TWU Tournament and the MSU Invitational, the Mustangs have turned a sluggish 1-4 start at the St. Mary's NCAA II Classic into a 10-4 mark.
Junior second baseman
Tabitha Yannetti garnered MVP honors at last weekend's MSU Invitational hitting .467 with four double and drove in nine runs to raise her season average to .390. The Mesquite native leads the team with seven doubles and has driven in 12 runs.
MSU is also receiving great contributions early in the season season from a pair of true freshmen -
Nicki Duff and
Mallory Mooney. Both were named to the All-MSU Invitational team last weekend.
Duff, a 5-6 outfielder from Plano, leads the team with a .419 average and gives MSU and added dimension of speed as she has already been successful on eight of her nine stolen base attempts this season.
Mooney came on strong over the weekend hitting a tournament-best .571 with a double and five RBI. The 5-8 third baseman from Mesquite raised her season average to .390 and is second on the team with four doubles.
Senior center fielder
Maranda Bishop also garnered all-tournament honors after hitting .467 with four doubles while scoring nine runs. She sports a .326 season average with three doubles and a triple while scoring a team-best 15 runs.
The Mustangs, who hit .371 as a team at the MSU Invitational to raise the team average to .318, are receiving all-around contribution as sophomore
Alyson Reynolds is hitting .343 with a pair of homers and senior first baseman
Jessica Rodriguez leads the Mustangs with four home runs and 14 RBI.
Junior
Katie Petersen, who has won each of her last five starts, leads MSU in the circle with a 5-3 record and a 2.09 ERA. She has allowed 14 earned runs on 39 hits while striking out 55 and walking 14 in 47 innings.
Brittney Tanner has come on strong to begin her sophomore campaign. The Burkburnett native is 5-1 with a 2.46 ERA and has allowed 13 earned runs on 22 hits with 36 strikeouts and 17 walks in 37 innings. The opposition is hitting just .167 off of Tanner.
Texas Woman's enjoys a multi-dimensional attack as the Pioneers feature both power and speed.
The powers is provided by junior right fielder Angie Arebalols (.408, 5 HR, 14 RBI) and junior third baseman Erin Hinojosa (.388, 4 HR, 16 RBI), while sophomore second baseman Hayley Siebman and senior center fielder Tiffanie Boone have stolen 10 bases each.
Junior Carly Case is TWU's top option in the circle and has posted a 7-2 mark with a 3.30 ERA. She has allowed 30 earned runs on 68 hits with 63 strikeouts and 22 walks in 63 2/3 innings. The opposition is hitting .276 off of Case.
First pitch for the twin bill is set for 4 p.m.
