PHOENIX - No. 28 Midwestern State closed the Grand Canyon President's Day Duels with a 7-2 win over No. 30 Sonoma State Saturday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club.
The Mustangs, who improved to 3-2 on the season, next battle Southwest Baptist (Mo.) on March 6 in Lawton.
MSU claimed all three doubles matches against the Seawolves with
Vjekoslav Stipanic and
Daniel McMullan teaming for an 8-4 win over Sonoma's Connor Olson and Jordan Smith at No. 1 while
Carlos Bataller and
Tiago Vilarinho edged Jeremy Heckly and Zel Sperry 9-7 at No. 2 and
Chad Meeks and
Octavian Dinuta rolled by Aaron Hamiton and Andrew Khuri-Yakub 8-2 at No. 3.
The Seawolves rallied for wins at the top two singles postions as Olson was up 5-3 in the first set before Stipanic withdrew due to illness at No. 1 while Sperry outlasted Vilarinho 3-6, 7-6, 10-4 at No. 2.
But the Mustangs rolled to straight-set victories at each of the other singles positions.
Bataller beat Heckley 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3, McMullan defeated Khuri-Yakub 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4, Dinuta dusted Hamilton 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and Meeks coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Smith at No. 6.
