#18 Mustangs blitz St. Mary’s, 5-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 18 Midwestern State jumped on St. Mary's (Texas) for early goals in half and cruised to a 5-0 win Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs, who improved to 10-1-2, extended their unbeaten streak to 12-straight matches while stretching their home unbeaten string to 19.

"We'd talked about it in the locker room that the earlier we scored the second, the quick we would take the life out of the them," MSU coach Doug Elder said.

The Mustangs got out quickly in the first half when senior midfielder Tyler Murphy scored his first goal of the season off of a header from Nathan Fitzgerald in the third minute of the match.

MSU turned up the pressure after intermission and finally found the back of the net after Kyle Hyden served a cross into the box from the left corner.

Hyden's serve initiated a three-header combo in the center of the box as Craig Sutherland redirected to Jake Landon who sent it to the far post to Nick Auditore, who deposited his team-leading eighth tally of the season to push the lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute.

Midwestern just kept pressuring as the Mustangs outshot the Rattler 31-3 including a 13-0 edge in shots on goals.

And senior forward Bryan Sajjadi made sure MSU put the match away by playing a hand in three goals over the 22 minutes of the match.

Sajjadi touched a give-and-go which resulted in Nathan Fitzgerald's second goal of the season in the 79th minute, then threaded a cross to Tex McCullough for another assist in the 82nd minute.

Sajjadi finally scored a goal of his after converting a penalty kick in the 90th minute.

"We played more consistent for a 90-minute period without a lot of letdown," Elder said.

The Mustangs defense allowed Raul Herrera to notch his ninth shutout of the season without having to make a save.

With the blanking, Herrera tied former MSU standout David Stockton with the most shutouts in a season since Midwestern became a member of NCAA Division II in 1995, but needs two more to match Jeff Henscheid (1980) and Kevin Payne (1986).

The Mustangs hit the road for a pair of Lone Star Conference matches next weekend.

MSU plays Eastern New Mexico Friday at noon before facing West Texas A&M Sunday at 3 p.m.

St. Mary's dropped to 4-8-1.
