No. 11 MSU, No. 6 West Texas A&M battle to another draw, 1-1

CANYON, Texas - No. 11 Midwestern State and No. 6 West Texas A&M have battled 220 minutes this season and still nothing has been decided as the Mustangs and Buffs battled to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at The Pitch.

"It's really difficult to come up here and get a win especially with the field conditions," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "The guys played hard and we created some good chances. We were the better soccer team today."

It was the second draw of the season for the programs that finished with a 1-1 tie back on Sep. 18 at the MSU Soccer Field.

The wind whipping down the west Texas plains was the biggest factor.

"It had to be blowing at 30 miles per hour," Elder said. "It was ridiculous."

The Mustangs used the wind in the opening half and took advantage when senior defender Brian Martinez served a through ball to sophomore forward Craig Sutherland who chested the ball, settled it and blasted a shot past West Texas A&M goalkeeper Sebastian Furness to give MSU a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

In the second half, it was West Texas A&M that got the aide of the wind in the ultimate way in the 53rd minute.

After the Mustangs cleared corner kick, the Buffs served ball back to the right wing before Freddy Dominguez seemed to mishit a cross.

"He shanked it from the corner and the wind caught it," Elder said. "It looked like it was going out, but it hit the cross bar and went in. It wasn't even a shot, but it counted. It really gave them a shot of life and they stepped up the pressure."

According to the box score, the Buffs peppered the Mustangs for 18 shots forcing MSU junior goalkeeper Raul Herrera to make seven saves.

"Raul only had to come of his line a couple of times and probably made about two saves," Elder said. "All of their chances came off of throw-ins and corners. They couldn't do much in the run of play."

The tie snapped an eight match winning streak for the Buffs, who are now 11-1-2 on the season and 2-0-2 in Lone Star Conference play. WT did extend its unbeaten streak to 11 matches.

The Buffs hit the road to close out the regular season with matches at Eastern New Mexico and Northeastern State.

The Mustangs, who are now 11-1-3 and 3-0-2 in the LSC, are unbeaten in their last 14 matches dating back to a 1-0 loss to Incarnate Word in the season opener.

Midwestern can clinch at least a share of its fifth-straight conference championship with a win over Northeastern State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field after the Mustangs play host to NAIA St. Thomas (Texas) Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
