Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Tigers snap No. 10 MSU’s 18-match unbeaten string, 1-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Juliana Cantu's crossing pass slipped through the hands of Midwestern State goalkeeper Ashley Meek and was redirected into the goal to provide the difference as East Central (Okla.) upset the 10th-ranked Mustangs 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

"We've played around a lot with 1-0 games this year," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We created a lot of chances, but just couldn't score."

The loss was the first of the season for MSU which fell to 9-1-2 overall and to 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The loss also snapped a lot of positive streaks for the Mustangs.

It was the first loss for MSU on its home pitch since falling 1-0 to Incarnate Word on Sep. 11, 2008 - a span of 12 games.

It was also the first regular season loss since the Mustangs suffered a 2-1 setback at Texas Woman's University on Oct. 12, 2008 - a span of 18 regular season matches.

It was the sixth contest decided by one goal and the fifth 1-0 match of the season for the Mustangs, who found a way to get the result each time until Sunday.

Midwestern outworked the Tigers through much of the match as the Mustangs outshot ECU 17-7 including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.

MSU junior midfielder/defender Kendra Clemons created opportunities for the Mustangs early and often. She played a hand in pair of counter attacks in the 13th and 16th minutes which created one-on-one opportunities for Kelsey Hill and Brittany Subia, but didn't result in shots on frame.

East Central had the best chance of the opening half when Carla Rodriguez collected a clear by MSU's Kat Bernick in the 42nd minute at the top of the 18-yard box and lofted a shot over Meek, but it glanced off of the crossbar to preserve a scoreless match into intermission.

It would be ECU's lone shot on goal until collecting the own goal in the 88th minute.

The Mustangs' last ditch effort to send the game into overtime was thwarted by Tiger goalkeeper Natalie Wilson on consecutive point blank saves of shots by Hill and Lindsey Pritchard in the 89th minute.

Midwestern State hits the road for a pair of LSC contests next weekend as the Mustangs battle Eastern New Mexico Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and West Texas A&M Sunday at 1 p.m.

East Central improved to 4-3-2 and 2-2.
