WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The beat keeps on rolling for Midwestern State.
Earl Rabb fell two rebounds shy of a triple-double, but led the Mustangs to their ninth-straight victory with a 95-82 Lone Star Conference South Division opening win over Angelo State Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Midwestern, which improved to 12-4 on the season, hits the road Saturday to face Texas A&M-Kingsville at Steinke Center. Tipoff is set 7 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game which beings at 5.
Rabb, a 6-3 senior point guard, finished with career highs with 19 points and 11 assists, but also added eight rebounds and six steals as he directed an MSU attack which hit at a 64.6 percent clip from the field.
The Mustangs used a 10-2 flourish to close out the first half and took a 40-36 lead into the intermission, then peeled off an 8-2 run to begin the second stanza and led 48-38 on an 8-foot jumper from
Michael Godwin three-and-a-half minutes into the half.
Midwestern would maintain a double-figure lead throughout much of the second half and led by as many as 17 at 93-76 with 1:07 to go.
Nolan Richardson scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, while
Craig Green dropped in 20 points - all in the second half.
Godwin finished the night nearly perfect as he hit each of his five shots from the field and connected on five of his six charity tosses to finish with a career-best 15 points. He also added four rebounds, an assist and two blocks.
Shavar Burch paced a quartet of Rams in double figures with 17 points and four rebounds.
Angelo State dropped its second-straight game to fall to 12-4.
Notes
* Midwestern State improved to 26-3 all time versus Angelo State in games played in Wichita Falls and 24-2 against the Rams at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Angelo's last win at Ligon came on Jan. 7, 1988 by 86-76 margin.
* The Mustangs have won nine-straight for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
* MSU has now won its last five games by at least 10 points.
