One Moore time: MSU rolls over Bulldogs for eighth-straight win, 77-67

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - With Nolan Richardson being hounded by the Southwestern Oklahoma State defense, Midwestern State had to look elsewhere for a scoring punch Saturday night at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.

And the Mustangs found it in a spot they didn't expect it.

Reserve guard Anthony Moore poured in a season-best 19 points to lead Midwestern to its eighth-straight win taking a 77-67 decision over the Bulldogs in the Mustangs' final Lone Star Conference crossover contest.

"It's hard to explain him," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "He doesn't look like a basketball player, but he finds a way to get the job done. There's no question he was the different in the game tonight."

The Mustangs (11-4) open LSC South Division play Wednesday night when they play host to Angelo State at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest which begins at 6.

Midwestern came off of the deck after the Bulldogs rattled off of a 10-0 run midway through the second half and took a 45-44 lead when Kenneth White nailed a 3-pointer with exactly 10 minutes remaining.

But the Mustangs and Richardson responded after a time out as the senior guard drilled a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 17-2 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes.

"We knew how physical they were going to be," Ray said. "But we have shown we can answer runs. You may put an 8-2 run on us, but we might answer with a 14-2 of our own."

The Mustangs had to survive another Southwestern push when Jose Garcia put back a Matej Mrkic miss of a second free-throw to pull the Bulldogs to within 63-55.

SWOSU's Abduallah Lawal stole the inbounds pass and hit a wide open Clarke Hale on the left wing, but his 3-point effort clanged off of the iron.

Trajinski Grigsby hit a trey on the other end of the floor as the Mustangs peeled off the next seven points and built their biggest lead of the night when Chalie Logan hit the back end of a two-shot foul with 2:39 to play.

"The kids just hung in there," Ray said. "It was a really physical game and the kids did a good job of handling adversity."

Grigsby turned his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a reserve role to pace the Mustangs to a 39-20 advantage in bench points.

Rabb also contributed a season 14 points to go along with six rebound and five assists.

White paced Southwestern Oklahoma State with 22 points, while Kendall Smith and Jerard Campbell pitched in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs, who have now dropped six of their last nine games, fell to 9-6 on the season.
