JOPLIN, Mo. - Midwestern State's middle combination of
Miranda Byrd,
Alysha Pritt and
Sesley Graves combined for 45 kills to lead the Mustangs to a 25-15, 27-29, 25-22, 25-20 win over Dallas Baptist in the Missouri Southern Invitational at Young Gymnasium.
With the win, MSU continued its stellar early season play and extended on the best start in school history to 8-0.
The Mustangs won each set over their first six matches before they were taken to five sets by Missouri Southern earlier on Sunday before dropping the second set against Dallas Baptist.
"It's still a learning process of getting familiar with lineups and playing together," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "This weekend has shown us we can overcome adversity. I feel we've grown from our experience from last year."
Byrd, a 6-1 freshman from Atlanta, Texas, had a season-high 22 kills and made just three errors in 38 attacks for a .500 kill percentage, while Pritt added 15 kills and committed just two errors for a .418 hitting rate and led the team with six total blocks.
Graves added eight kills with just one error in 15 attacks for a .467 kill percentage.
Senior
Allison Schreiber continued her stellar play by directed the MSU attack to a .336 hitting percentage and finished with 54 assists while logging her first double-double of the year with 13 digs.
Senior libero
Shay Velasquez finished with a team-high 14 digs, while
Katie Guehler added nine.
The Mustangs will battle the same Dallas Baptist squad in their home on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Dallas Baptist fell to 4-4.
