Subia’s last-minute goal lifts MSU to 2-1 win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Midwestern State's Brittany Subia scored with 38 seconds remaining give the Mustangs a 2-1 win over Colorado-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Subia collected a pass on the right wing, cut to the center of the box and blasted a shot into the net from 16 yards out to give the Mustangs their third-straight win and fifth win in their last six matches.

"We stepped up the intensity and played really good soccer in the second half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "It's fun right now. It's nice to dictate play and get rewarded for it."

The Mountain Lions (2-5-1) struck first as Brianna Guzzardo netted her first goal of the season at the 34:11 mark.

UCCS matched the Mustangs shot-for-shot in the first half, but Midwestern controlled possession and created opportunities by outshooting the Mountain Lions 20-5 after Colorado-Colorado Springs took a one-goal lead into the intermission.

"It was nice to continue to get after it especially in this altitude," Trimble said. "The girls looked fit, they worked hard and played very well in the second half."

MSU freshman Kelsey Hill struck with the equalizer in the 52nd minute when she collected a loose ball, made one touch and scored from 15 yards out before Subia sent the Mustangs home as winners in the match's final minute.

The win gives Midwestern (5-3) momentum going into its Lone Star Conference opener next Friday at Angelo State.

"I really feel like we're playing good soccer," Trimble said. "We still have to show up and play, but I'm very proud of the girls."
