WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's Kelsey Hill delivered her second hat trick of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 4-2 win over Southern Nazarene Tuesday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"She's playing with a lot of composure," MSU coach Jeff Trimble. "She stays focused under pressure and keeps her head up. She keeps control of the ball and finished well. I'm proud of her."
Hill scored a goal on a through ball from Brittany Subia in the 15th minute to give the Mustangs and early and short-lived lead as Southern Nazarene stormed back 30 seconds later after Beatriz Silva deposited a goal off of a misclear into an empty net.
The teams battled through an even first half producing nine shots, but the Mustangs stepped up their intensity to dominate the second half.
The Crimson Storm answered an early goal by MSU's Brittany Subia with a Rachel Eguren score to knot the game at 2-2 in the 51st.
But Hill put the match away with goals in the 52nd and 59th minute off of assists from Brittany O'Neal and Kari Bristow as the Mustangs improved to 3-3.
"At times, we take our home field and fans for granted," Trimble said. "Our effort in the first half wasn't acceptable. I was proud of the way we responded in the second half, but we have a lot of work to do."
Trimble also praised the play of Lindsey McNulty, who came off the bench in the second half.
"She won a lot of balls in the back for us and gave great effort," he said.
Midwestern State, which placed 16 of its 23 shots on goal, enjoys a 10-day break before facing Colorado Mines in Golden on Sep. 26 and Colorado-Colorado Spring on Sep. 28.
Southern Nazarene, which came into the match ranked No. 15 in NAIA Division I, falls to 4-1.
