One chance enough for Incarnate Word, Cards edge MSU 1-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Incarnate Word had just one good chance in the second half against Midwestern State Thursday night at the MSU Soccer Field.

And Cardinals' forward Sarah Hernandez didn't let it slip away as she converted a breakaway created by a perfectly struck through ball by her twin sister, Emily to give Incarnate Word a 1-0 result.

"There were two things that were discouraging," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We outplayed them in the second half and we played defensive well. They caught us one time and made us pay after we caught them a few times and didn't make them pay."

The Mustangs controlled possession throughout the second half after the teams battled through a scoreless opening half.

The Mustangs held a 12-2 advantage in shots in the second half and produced eight corners while limiting Incarnate Word to one.

But junior forward Brittany O'Neal couldn't convert MSU's two best chances and the Mustangs produced just two shots off of their eight corner chances.

Incarnate Word goalkeeper Ashton Caffery, who finished with six saves included four in the second half, made a sprawling save on O'Neal's blast toward the far post from just outside the 18-yard box in the 61st minute.

O'Neal was unable to settle the ball after receiving a brilliant through from Kat Bernick in the 82nd minute.

But the Hernandez sisters connected on a long through ball down the right wing as Sarah Hernandez used two touches before beating MSU goalkeeper Ashley Meek to the near post.

Meek had come on for Heather Primavera in the 22nd minute. Primavera left with an apparent leg injury.

"I'm very proud of Ashley to come in a play as well as she did," Trimble said.

Meek made solid decisions and helped organize the MSU defense after Primavera made three crucial early saves.

Midwestern State, which fell to 2-3, completes its four-game home stand Tuesday night against Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.

Incarnate Word improved to 3-1.
