SAN ANGELO, Texas – Ashley Kuchenski weaved a two-hitter and extended her career-best hitting streak to 11 games, but it was not enough to overcome Angelo State as the No. 4 Rambelles held on for a 2-0 win in Game 1 Saturday afternoon at the ASU Softball Field.
Angelo State scored an unearned run in the first inning, then tacked on another in the fifth to support a seven-hit shutout by Rambelle ace Kari Galm.
Galm improved to 27-2 on the season by striking out six and walking none.
The Mustangs left two on base in each of the first two innings and stranded seven for the game, but didn't advance a runner past second base.
Kuchenski ripped a single through the left side with one out in the second inning to extend her hitting streak, then reached on an infield single in the seventh.
The senior from Magnolia didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, but the Mustangs allowed the Rambelles to plate a leadoff walk by Brittney Cargill in the bottom of the first.
Cargill advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a passed ball and scored on Macy Baker's groundout to shortstop.
Angelo's Kristen Frye's triple to the right-field gap with two outs in the fifth broke up Kuchenski's bid for a no-hitter. Frye scored on Cargill's infield single to deep short to give the Rambelles a 2-0 lead.
Kuchenski fell to 6-9 after allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits with one strikeout and a walk in six innings of work.
Midwestern State fell to 32-25 on the season, while Angelo State improved to 42-9.
