Renz, Pioneers too much for MSU in home finale

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Kaylon Hodge dropped in season-high 15 points in Wednesday night's home finale against Texas Woman's University.

But it wasn't enough to offset a 26-point, 15-rebound performance by TWU's Renee Renz as the Pioneers pulled away for a 64-51 Lone Star Conference South Division win at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Pioneers kept their slim postseason hopes alive by improving to 12-14 on the season and 7-6 in division. To make next week's LSC postseason tournament in Bartlesville, TWU needs a Tarleton State loss at Angelo State and a win over division leading West Texas A&M Saturday in Denton.

The Mustangs, meanwhile, dropped their seventh-straight game for the first time since January 1996 to fall to 10-16 and 3-10.

Midwestern State concludes the season by traveling to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Zias.

The Mustangs led by as many seven points in the opening half, but the Pioneers used a 7-0 run over the final 3:42 of the half to tie the game at 27-27 at intermission.

MSU went without a field goal for the last 3:42 of the first half and the first 3:42 of the second, but trailed by only three when Rosy Ofoegbu's layup pulled the Mustangs within 34-31 at the 16:18 mark of the second half.

The Pioneer would reel off the next 17 points fueled by nine points from Renz, who scored 20 of her game-high 26 in the second half.

The junior transfer from Arkansas-Little Rock notched her 10th double-double of the year after finishing with 15 rebounds and added four steals.

Hodge led the Mustangs by going 6-for-8 from the field including her first two 3-pointers of the season while adding six rebounds and three steals in 34 minutes of play.

She was joined in double figures by Ofoegbu, who finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Stacey Staten had eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.
