KINGSVILLE, Texas – Midwestern State's
Stacey Staten poured in a career-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a hot shooting game as Texas A&M-Kingsville cruised to an 86-71 Lone Star Conference South Division win Saturday at Steinke Center.
"They played well," MSU coach Shannon Burks said. "They penetrated the ball hard and were able to get points on penetration, then we adjusted they hit shots from the arc."
The Javelinas, who snapped an eight-game losing streak to improve to 6-17 on the season and 2-8 in LSC South play, hit 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from 3-point range led by sophomore guard Felicia Soza.
Soza hit five treys to lead Texas A&M-Kingsville outside game with 23 points, while junior center LaKeisha Jones led the inside game by hitting 11-of-14 shots and finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
The Javelinas, who shot 54 percent from the field, were shooting 38.8 percent for the season from the field and 34.6 percent from the arc.
"I fault our defense in certain ways," Burks said. "I'm disappointed that we made this long trip and didn't perform any better than we did."
Offensively, Staten hit eight of her 12 shots from the field to lead a 45.6 percent shooting game from the field, while junior guard
Brandy Moore connected on four 3s to finish with 14 points.
"We'd take our shooting numbers on the road anytime," Burks said. "We had too many turnovers and too many breakdowns on the defensive end to give us a chance to win it."
The Mustangs have now lost four-straight games and have not won on the road since defeating East Central 71-55 on Jan. 10 in Ada, Okla. Overall, MSU is 2-10 away from Ligon Coliseum this season.
The Mustangs play host to Angelo State Wednesday night in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
