ABILENE, Texas – Harlon Hill candidate Bernard Scott rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown as No. 2 Abilene Christian rolled to a 47-17 win over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon at Shotwell Stadium.
Abilene Christian completes its first undefeated regular season since 1950 at 10-0 and claimed an outright Lone Star Conference championship with a perfect 8-0 mark.
Midwestern State finished at 6-4 for its ninth-straight winning campaign as the Mustangs finished with a 3-3 mark against the LSC South Division and 5-4 overall in the LSC.
"We made improvements all the way until the second half of this game," MSU coach
Bill Maskill said. "But this is a quality team and you can see that with the amount of attention they've garnered in a lot of the polls.
The Mustangs took advantage of an
Antoine Cumby interception on ACU's opening drive to take an early lead.
MSU quarterback
Zack Eskridge hit
Tyron Morrison for a 10-yard touchdown connection three plays later to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead 2:47 minutes into the contest.
It was the first of two touchdown passes of the game for Eskridge, who finished the season with a school-record 18 touchdown passes to move past Phillip Boggs and
Daniel Polk, who each had 16 TD passes in 2002 and 2007, respectively.
Abilene Christian's Billy Malone, who was 19-of-32 for 262 yards and four touchdowns in his first action in three weeks, hit Edmund Gates on a 28-yard scoring toss to knot the game at 7-7 with 7:07 to go in the first quarter.
The Mustangs surged back into the lead when Eskridge hit
Andy Tanner on a 3-yard scoring connection to take a 14-7 lead with 3:45 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Mustangs' defense held Abilene Christian to field goals in trips to the red zone in its next two possession to maintain a 14-13, then MSU its lead to 17-13 on a 44-yard
Lee Scott field goal with 5:38-mark of the second quarter.
But it was all Abilene Christian from that point on as the Wildcats scored the final 34 points of the game.
"I thought we played almost as well as we could have in the first half, then played just the opposite in the second half," Maskill said.
Sophomore running back
Marcus Mathis rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries to lead the MSU rushing attack, while junior
Bobby Ransom added 56 yards on nine carries.
Eskridge completed 11-of-22 passes for 73 yards, but was intercepted once and sacked on six occasions.
Sophomore safety
Ryan Craven and junior linebacker
Emmanuel Bagley paced the defense with 10 tackles each.
