WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State used an energetic and intense start to build an early lead, then coasted to an 81-68 win over Wayland Baptist Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU scored the first six points of the contest, then extended its lead to 12 after
Craig Green and
Trajinski Grigsby canned consecutive 3-pointers to give the Mustangs a 14-2 at the 16:17 mark.
The lead would grow to 26-10 after Grigsby followed
Nolan Richardson's four-point play by hitting the front of a two-shot foul halfway through the opening half.
Wayland Baptist (7-1) responded with a 9-0 run of their own to claw to within 26-20, but that's as close the game would get.
Richardson netted 14 of his team-high 16 points in the first half and added six assists as the Mustangs shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the field.
Grigsby recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Green finished with 12 points.
The loss snapped Wayland Baptist's seven-game, season opening winning streak. The Pioneers were paced by Jason Griffin, who was 7-of-11 from the field including four 3-pointers off of the bench.
The win was the third-straight for the Mustangs improved to 3-1 on the season. MSU kicks off a three-game road trip at Central Oklahoma Tuesday night in Edmond.
