EDMOND, Okla. - No. 6 Central Oklahoma hadn't seen its home floor this season.
Hamilton Fieldhouse proved to be tonic for its shooting touch as the Bronchos buried Midwestern State with eight first-half treys and shot 52.8 percent from beyond the arc to cruise to a 92-78 Lone Star Conference crossover win.
The win was the 16th-straight for UCO in Edmond as the Bronchos improved to 5-0.
"Our energy level wasn't there in the first half," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "That's something I can't explain right now, but as a coaching staff we have to figure it out. You have to be pretty close to perfect to come on the road and beat a team like this."
Senior guard David Thomas poured in four treys in the first half as Central Oklahoma built a commanding 19-point lead after Tyler Phillips bombed in a 3 from the right corner as the Bronchos led 40-21 with 3:10 remaining in the opening half.
Thomas shot 8-for-10 from the field including all six of his 3-point efforts to finish with a game-high 26 points to pace a trio UCO players in double figures.
Senior guard
Nolan Richardson poured each of his team-high 17 points after the intermission as the Mustangs pulled within nine on two occasions in second half as they held the Bronchos to just one field goal - Thomas' fifth 3 - in the first nine minutes.
"Early in the second half, we showed just what type of basketball team we can be," Ray said. "This teams can be really good, but were not there right now."
But UCO leading scorer Lance Harper scored nine of his 16 points during a 3-minute stretch to stymie the MSU comeback effort as the Bronchos pulled away to take a 92-68 lead with 1:51 reamining.
When the Bronchos weren't using a great ball movement to find open shooters around the arc, they were turning MSU turnovers into points.
UCO converted 13 first-half Mustangs' turnovers into 22 points.
Midwestern erased an early 7-0 Central Oklahoma advantage and claimed its only lead of the night as
Trajinski Grigsby nailed back-to-back 3s and
Charlie Logan followed a misfired
Craig Green 3-point attempt with a layup as MSU went up 8-7 4:30 into the contest.
But the Bronchos used runs of 6-2 and 12-2 to take a 46-30 lead into the half.
Junior guard
Phillip Homere added 14 points, while Grigsby finished with 12 points.
Quincy Sarpy also turned in a solid, all-around effort with seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Mustangs, who fell to 3-2 on the season, face the University of Texas of the Permian Basin Monday night in Odessa. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
