Smith lifts Mustangs past Abilene Christian in final minute of regulation

ABILENE, Texas – Midwestern State closed its second-straight Sunday match with a game winning goal in the final minute of regulation.

Again, Brittany Subia played a key role in send the Mustangs home victorious, but this time the sophomore midfielder struck a low cross through the box to Jordan Smith, who drove into the back of net to give MSU a 1-0 result over Abilene Christian at the ACU Soccer Field.

"I was concerned about us starting to believe we couldn't finish," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We are still struggling with that, but we are playing better."

Last week, Subia netted the game winner at Colorado-Colorado Springs, but Sunday she played the role of creator.

Subia worked the ball down the right wing before serving a cross on the ground to the far post, where Smith finished for her first goal of the season.

The win improves the Mustangs to 6-4 overall, but more importantly evens their Lone Star Conference mark at 1-1.

MSU continues with its fifth- and sixth-straight matches on the road next weekend as it faces LSC foes Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday and Texas Woman's on Sunday.

"None of the league games are going to be easy," Trimble said. "They will all be close and that's why it was important for us to find a way to win today."

Timble lauded the effort of sophomore Kendra Clemons, who played her second-straight game at center back after spending must of the season in the central midfield.

"She's a good, smart soccer player," he said. "It was impressive the way she played in the back today."

Brittany O'Neal also provided a spark up front for the Mustangs.

"She never stopped working today," Trimble said. "Her work rate was great."

Abilene Christian dropped its third-straight match to fall to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the LSC.
