TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 11 Emporia State put three attackers in double figures and slowed down No. 20 Midwestern State's attack as the Hornets claimed a 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 win Friday afternoon at the Lady Blues' Fall Classic at Lee Arena.
Arica Shepard, Brittney Miller and Megan Koster combined for 25 of Hornets' 46 kills as the trio hit .333 to help Emporia State to its 14th-straight win to improve to 17-1.
"They had a huge block and used great position," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "This is the first time we've seen that, but if we want to make a run then this is the kind of team we have to beat. It was a good experience for us."
It was the first loss for the Mustangs, who opened the season with a school-record 18-straight wins. MSU will face host No. 9 Washburn (15-2) at 7 p.m. tonight at Lee Arena.
The Hornets forced 10 MSU errors as the Mustangs were unable to overcome the sluggish start to end up with a season-low .121 team hitting percentage.
After Emporia State controlled the first set, the Mustangs used a stronger attack to rally from a 20-13 deficit in the second set before falling 25-22.
MSU, who hit -.029 in the opening set, rebounded to commit just three errors in the second set.
The Mustangs continued the strong attack in the third set, racing out to a 10-6 advantage, but the Hornets rallied to take five-straight points after a timeout to knot the set at 11-11, then used a 4-1 spurt later in the set to pull away to close out the match.
