Hill keys onslaught as Mustangs bury UCO, 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Five minutes and 30 seconds.

That's exactly how it took Midwestern State to end eight years and 12 matches of frustration against Central Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

In that span of time, the Mustangs exploded for each of their three goals in a 3-0 Lone Star Conference win over the Bronchos.

"UCO is a very, very good soccer team," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We got in a situation where we were able to pressure them and put several goals in a short period."

The win was the first for MSU over Central Oklahoma since 1999 and erased a 12-game losing streak to the Bronchos.

But it was more important because it clinched a berth in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament as the Mustangs can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win over Southwestern Oklahoma on Saturday and if West Texas A&M loses to either at Abilene Christian or Angelo State this week.

Midwestern did it in grand style as Kelsey Hill scored two goals less than three minutes apart and Kendra Clemons added another three minutes later to give the Mustangs a commanding lead.

In that 5-and-a-half minute span, MSU managed to score as many goals as it had mustered in its previous eight tries against the Bronchos.

But it didn't look good in the early going as UCO's three-forward attack was stretching Midwestern's defense and creating excellence chances for the Bronchos.

"(Their offensive shape) really spread us out and they were taking it to us," Trimble said. "Then Kelsey scored and took a lot of pressure off."

Hill took a through ball from Jamie Pompey, slipped past a defender and nailed a shot to the top right corner of the net to begin the Mustangs' scoring binge at the 22:52 mark.

Hill played another through ball which resulted in a breakaway chance where she easily beat Central Oklahoma goalkeeper Samantha Rusk at the 25:39 mark to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Midwestern wasn't done, though.

Clemons played a give-and-go with Megan Bibilone on the right wing, then looped a shot over Rusk from 15 yards out to give the Mustangs an early 3-0 lead.

That's all goalkeeper Heather Primavera and the MSU defense would need she made four saves to notch her fourth shutout of the season.

The Mustangs extended their winning streak to six matches which rates as the second longest streak in program history.

"I'm really proud of the way the girls played in the back," Trimble said. "The girls are playing really consistent right now and we are playing our best soccer at the right time."

The Mustangs close the regular season against Southwestern Oklahoma State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Notes

* Freshman Kelsey Hill became the fifth player in MSU history to record at least 30 points in a season. The Rider High product has scored 14 goals and added three assists for a total of 31 points. Hill's 14 goals is the sixth most in program history and is fourth most for a freshman.
* Reigning Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Kari Bristow accounted for an assist in Wednesday's win over Central Oklahoma and has now had a hand in a goal for four-straight games.
