WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State has made a habit of pulling matches out in the final minute.
But Eastern New Mexico just about turned the table on the Mustangs as
Heather Primavera's sliding, one-on-one stop of Alicia Cunningham's serve with 20 seconds to go in regulation preserved a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"I was scared this would happen and, to be honest, we are really banged up," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "Eastern New Mexico played very well and worked hard. We didn't work hard."
The Mustangs came out sluggish in the first half and were limited to five total shots, but picked up play early in the second half.
Kari Bristow worked a through ball to
Kelsey Hill in the 69th minute. Hill gathered the ball on the end line and served a cross to
Brandy O'Neal, who one-timed it for her third goal of the season to Midwestern a 1-0 lead.
Bristow was at it again in the 78th minute when she had a through ball attempt knocked back at her feet near the top of the box, so the midfielder took on one defender before blasting a shot to the upper right-hand corner of the net to beat Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas.
The goal appeared to give the Mustangs an insurmountable advantage, but the Zias fought back in the closing minutes.
Christie Nylaan collected a carom off of MSU keeper
Heather Primavera's gloves and headed it in to pull Eastern New Mexico within a goal with just over a 1:30 remaining.
The Zias kept pressuring and forced a turnover in the Mustangs' zone that was served ahead to Cunningham, who breaking free in the box, Primavera was able to cut the angle and made a sliding stop to preserve the victory for MSU.
MSU, which has now won five-straight matches, improved to 11-6 on the season and 5-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while Eastern New Mexico dropped to 8-9 and 2-6.
The Mustangs play host to Central Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
