WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State showed character and emotion in Friday night's 3-2 overtime win over West Texas A&M at the MSU Soccer Field.
But that's not all it took.
It took an equalizing penalty kick in the 87th and then it took the concentration of junior
Brittany O'Neal to knock in the game winner in the 98th minute after a pair of blocked shots in the box.
The Mustangs' flare for the dramatic has been apparent all year as they have posted three golden-goal wins and scored in the final minute of regulation on three other occasions.
"When it happens once or twice, it's kind of nifty and nice," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "We've consistently done it and it's not what we enjoy, but it a lot about how hard the girls work."
O'Neal also proved a lot after heading to the bench late in regulation after collecting a yellow card in the 83rd minute.
"Coached talked to me to cool me off," O'Neal said after absorbing a shot to the face on a scrum. "She busted my lip. I just had to stay composed."
Trimble took the opportunity to channel the emotion.
"We get emotional and sometimes we lose our cool, but it does show our emotion," he said.
The Mustangs survived a West Texas A&M rush in the 94th minute that appeared to produce the game winner for the Lady Buffs, but Elisabeth Markussen was ruled offside before knocking in what would have been her second goal of the contest.
Midwestern pushed the ball down the field and had two great looks at a goal before O'Neal banged in the winner.
Kelsey Hill and
Kendra Clemons had a shot blocked before the ball caromed to an open O'Neal about 15 yards from the goal.
"It deflected off of one of the defenders and I just put it in," O'Neal said.
The win is the fourth-straight for MSU, who improved to 10-6 on the season and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play, while West Texas A&M fell to 12-3-1 and 6-2.
The Mustangs surrendered goals early in each half, but also fought back for the equalizer.
West Texas A&M surged ahead in the 15th minute on Makussen's 17th goal of the season before freshman Lindsey Pritchard collected a loose ball in the box to ping it off of the crossbar and down into the goal just 14 second before intermission.
The Lady Buffs struck for a goal in the 47th minute after Lindsay McHorse headed in a cross from Markussen to take a 2-1 lead.
But the Mustangs, who outshot West Texas A&M 21-15, took the aggression to the Lady Buffs and pushed the game to overtime when
Kari Bristow converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute.
The Mustangs continue their five-game home stand on Sunday when they play host to Eastern New Mexico. Kickoff is set for noon.
