Sutherland, Mustangs bury Eastern New Mexico, 3-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Chris and Eleanor Sutherland just might need to extend their Texas holiday a little bit longer.

"They are my good luck charms," MSU redshirt-freshman Craig Sutherland said.

Sutherland scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season Sunday afternoon to help No. 2 Midwestern State to a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico at the MSU Soccer Field.

"It wasn't pretty, but it was a win," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "Any time a team keeps 10 defenders and a goalkeeper behind the ball, you're not going to get many chances."

The result was MSU's 10th-straight victory as the Mustangs improved to 12-1 on the season and 4-0 in Southwest Soccer Conference play.

Midwestern awaits the NSCAA poll on Tuesday with the expectation of moving to No. 1 after current top-ranked Lynn (Fla.) fell to Eckerd (Fla.) 1-0 on Saturday night.

Sutherland, who has now scored three goals with his parents in attendance, found a crack in the Eastern New Mexico defense just 2:42 into the match as junior forward Kyle Kmiec fought his way into the box.

"Bomber (Kmiec) played and I just went around (the goalkeeper) and slipped in," Sutherland said. "We just had to pick our opportunities and be patient."

Sutherland was also the beneficiary of a nifty combination in the 57th minute as Ahmad Ihmeidan found Rob Humphrey on the right wing.

Humphrey knocked a cross into box for a sliding Sutherland.

"It was a perfect cross that was able to one-time," he said.

Redshirt-freshman Ryan Spence struck for his first collegiate goal when he knocked in a deflection after Landon Fruge's blast caromed off of ENMU keeper Grant Shanahan in the 73rd minute.

Once again, the Midwestern State defense stepped up to limit the Greyhounds to just four shots with just two falling on goal.

"I don't think they ever really threatened," Elder said. "It was like they wanted to play to keep the shots down and they did."

Senior goalkeeper Shawn Carr had to make just two saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Carr, who recorded four consecutive shutouts, has not permitted a goal since Metro State's Kellen Johnson scored at the 4:48 mark on Sep. 28 in Denver – a span of 400:12.

Midwestern State travels to Austin to take on No. 12 St. Edward's Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
