WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It might not have been pretty, but Midwestern State must have felt like Picasso in surviving Texas A&M-Kingsville 25-19, 25-14, 22-25, 14-25, 15-13 Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The win snaps the Mustangs' four-match losing streak and gives MSU 20 wins for the second-straight year and for the third time since coach
Venera Flores-Stafford took the helm of the program in 2004.
"This will help us get our rhythm back and start getting familiar with each other again," Flores-Stafford said. "The most important part is recovering our confidence. Once you get a little of it, you want to keep on going."
Shay Velasquez led a strong defensive effort as the senior libero from Amarillo recorded 27 of MSU's 80 digs to frustrate the Javelinas into 33 total errors and a .087 team hitting percentage.
But Texas A&M-Kingsville gave the Mustangs pause for doubt as the Javelinas rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force the match into five sets.
After the Mustangs rattled off 25-19 and 25-14 wins in the opening sets by posting 11 kills in each set while committing five errors, Texas A&M-Kingsville proved it could also turn up the intensity.
The Javelinas forced the Mustangs into 13 errors and .000 hitting percentage to claim the third set 25-22 before hounding MSU into errors and a .023 team kill percentage for a 25-14 win in the fourth set.
Texas A&M-Kingsville had the Mustangs on the ropes early in the fifth set Kristin Chacellor converted three service aces in a six-serve run to give the Javelinas a 7-4 lead.
But
Alysha Pritt sandwiched a pair of kills around two Texas A&M-Kingsville attack errors to give the Mustangs an 11-9 lead.
Pritt, who paced the Mustangs with 14 kills, would put away another kill before
Jessica Ransom clinched the match with her 10th kill of the night.
MSU senior setter
Allison Schreiber finished a superb all-around night with 39 assists, 19 digs and six kills, while senior defensive specialist
Katie Guehler added 13 digs.
Velasquez added a season-high five service aces as she passed Shayna Buxton to become MSU's all-time aces' leader. Buxton had 184 aces in 456 sets from 1996-99, while Velasquez needed 452 sets to accumulate 186.
Midwestern State, which improved to 20-6 overall and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference, plays host to Tarleton State Saturday afternoon at Ligon Coliseum. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
Texas A&M-Kingsville dropped to 7-13 and 3-5.
