WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's
Nolan Richardson IV scored 18 points, but the Mustangs were unable sustain a seven-point lead as Tarleton State came away with a 62-54 win in the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for the both teams Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Richardson ignited a 6-0 run with a runner in the lane at the 10:30 mark of the second half and
Trajinski Grigsby capped it with his second 3-pointer of the game to give Midwestern its largest lead of the night at 46-39 with 8:10 to go.
But the Texans chipped away and took the lead on an Avery Patterson trey from the corner to give Tarleton State a 54-52 advantage with 3:11 remaining.
Richardson gave the Mustangs their only offense with a baseline jumper with 53 seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough to hold off Tarleton State's 13-2 run over the game's final 4:33.
The Texans, who improved to 14-2, limited Midwestern to 28.1-percent shooting from the floor aincluding a 3-of-24 (12.5 percent) effort from the 3-point line.
Tarleton also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Mustangs, 54-42.
Midwestern State, which also used a stifling press to limit the Texans to 36.5-percent shooting including a 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from the arc, turned 19 Tarleton turnovers into 20 points.
Meanwhile, the Texans were only able to convert 12 MSU turnovers into four points.
Grigsby joined Richardson in double figures for the Mustangs as the 6-6 junior forward finished with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Patterson paced the Texans with a game-high 19 points, while Terrence Gamble had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Mustangs, who fell to 8-7, play host to Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
