WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Incarnate Word's Nick Evans ripped a shot from 40 yards out into net in the 81st to give the No. 24-ranked Cardinals a 1-0 win over No. 8 Midwestern State Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
The Mustangs (3-1) out shot Incarnate Word 18-9 and dominated play throughout much of the match, but was unable to capitalize on several key opportunities.
Senior forward
Daniel Brown missed the left and right posts in the closing 20 minutes of the first half.
He connected on a cross from
Tyler Murphy in the 27th minute that faded 3 feet wide of the right post before misfiring on Estavao Alexandre's serve in the 44th minute to allow the match to go into intermission knotted at 0-0.
The Cardinals, who improved to 2-0 on the season, were held without a shot into the 33rd minute of the contest, but managed to match Midwestern shot for shot in the second half as each got off seven shots.
Midwestern State will try to rebound from the loss Sunday afternoon when it plays host to St. Edward's. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
