SAN ANGELO, Texas – Texas-Brownsville's attack duo of Talita Milasauskas and Maria Alarcon gave Midwestern State fits as they combined for 37 kills in Saturday's afternoon's finale of the Fairfield Inn/Staybridge Suites Invitational at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
But the big hits also shook the Mustangs from another sluggish start as MSU rattled off wins of 30-24, 30-21 and 30-22 after dropping Game 1 30-25.
"We had to find our rhythm again," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We did, but they are some big-time hitters and that pumped us and motivated us."
The Mustangs (5-2) also relied on their depth as senior outside hitter
Krissa Johnson struggled to work around Scorpions' big block and finished with three kills.
Junior
Whitney Maxwell stepped in after not playing earlier Saturday against New Mexico Highlands to lead the team with 15 kills and a stellar .778 attack percentage.
"The second game they out they had to pick up the pace keep it at that level," Flores-Stafford said. "It's just a maturity and unity of the team. We're young and they are doing it one piece at a time."
Flores-Stafford's rotation ran 14 deep as the Mustangs limited Texas-Brownsville to a .170 attack percentage despite Milasaukas' 20-kill effort.
That's because the Mustangs feature a potent front line of their own as sophomores
Alysha Pritt and
Sesley Graves teamed with junior
Jessica Ransom for 13 total team blocks.
Pritt led the way with seven, while Graves and Ransom had five each, while junior libero
Shay Velasquez and junior setter
Allison Schreiber added 23 and 15 digs each, respectively.
Schreiber also added 46 set assists, while effectively finding open space on the floor for seven kills on dumps.
Midwestern State will make its home debut Tuesday night against Wayland Baptist with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
Texas-Brownsville fell to 5-3.
