Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mustangs knock off No. 13 Washburn, 1-0

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - A combination of great defense and an opportunistic group of underclassmen proved deadly for No. 13 Washburn Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.

Freshman midfielder Brittany Subia converted an assist from Katy Lukert down the right wing to score the match's lone goal and a senior laden defense of Cassidy Guice, Melissa Brown and Tory Broadhurst limited the Lady Blues to seven shots as the Mustangs came away with a 1-0 victory.

"It's an exciting start to the season. I'm very proud of the girls," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 with a pair of wins at home against 2006 NCAA Division II postseason qualifiers as Midwestern had claimed a 3-1 win over Central Missouri Friday night.

"Getting the scoring opportunities as been the key," Trimble said. "We got up the field and we were dangerous today."

Freshman forward Lauren Smith, who had got the Mustangs started with a goal in the opening three minutes Friday night against Central Missouri, had another jump start opportunity in the 10th minute Sunday afternoon against the Lady Blues.

After settling a long pass from Broadhurst, Smith beat Washburn keeper Ashley Klone to the ball and lofted a shot over her head and towards the goal. The crowd roared as the ball neared goal, but it deflected off the post as the game remained scoreless.

After surviving a dangerous scramble on a Washburn corner kick when Brittany Tracz missed the open net high from about 18 yards, the Mustangs stayed on the attack.

Lukert sent a pass down the right wing and Subia gathered and buried a shot from just inside the box at the 19:24 mark.

That would ball the Mustangs would need as junior keeper Heather Primavera earned her seventh career shutout, but only had to make two saves.

That's because the back line marked 2007 NSCAA All American jessica Mainz to just one shot, while allowing Washburn a total of seven shots, but only two of those were on goal.

The Mustangs (2-0) return action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they play host to the Unversity of Texas of the Permian Basin.

Washburn fell to 0-1-1.
