PENSACOLA, Fla. - Senior
Krissa Johnson had a key block and two thunderous kills down the stretch to allow Midwestern State to come away with a 3-2 season opening win over West Georgia at the Comfort Inn-vitational Friday afternoon at the University of West Florida Fieldhouse.
Johnson's late performance allowed the Mustangs to come away with a 15-13 decision in the fifth game after the teams split the first four by scores of 30-26, 22-30, 30-32 and 30-22.
"We played well in our first match of the season," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "I thought it would go five because of the jitters and the different lineups. They handled the learning curve against a good team."
Johnson finished the match with 13 kills and six digs, but it was junior
Jessica Ransom who led MSU with 15 kills.
Junior
Whitney Maxwell finished with seven kills and only made one attack error for a sterling .545 kill rate.
Senior
Shay Velasquez paced the Mustangs with 19 digs, while junior Allison Schreiver had 50 set assists.
