AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 28-ranked Midwestern State University Mustangs had little trouble in avenging an earlier loss to the No. 27 Incarnate Word by blitzing the Cardinals 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central 1 Regional at the South Austin Tennis Center.
MSU (11-9) swept all three doubles matches from UIW (6-7), before picking up a pair of singles wins to halt the match.
The Mustangs were paced by the play of the number three doubles team of
Charles van Swelm and
Travis Stegner. The duo beat Rudy Obregon and Mike Hastings 8-6, then both won their respective singles matches.
Van Swelm dispatched UIW's David Knaszak 6-0, 6-1 at number three singles, then Stegner ended the match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Hastings.
The Mustangs 22nd ranked doubles team of All-Americans
Brett Emerson and
Zac Dillard beat Henry Estrella and Chase Holliday 8-5 at number one doubles, and
Stefan McKinney and
Fernando Villarreal dispatched Knaszak and Chris Suciu 8-5.
MSU was ahead or even in the rest of the singles matches when the match was decided.
The Mustangs move on to face 15th ranked St. Edward's, the region's top-ranked team, Friday at 10 a.m. in the Central 1 Regional Final. The regional winner advances to the round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., next week.
