OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla . – The No. 29-Midwestern State University Mustangs went the distance, but fell in the final two singles matches of the day as the No. 28 Abilene Christian University Wildcats claimed the Lone Star Conference Men's Tennis Championship 5-4 Friday morning at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
MSU (11-9) fell behind early in the match to the Wildcats (24-9).
After All-Americans
Brett Emerson and
Zac Dillard beat George Carstens and Bryce Hicks at number one 8-6, the Cats took the other two doubles points.
ACU's Kevin Beedy and Ryan Hudson downed
Charles van Swelm and
Fernando Villarreal at No. 2 8-5, while Juan Nunez and Luke Hawk beat
Stefan McKinney and
Travis Stegner 8-5 at No. 3, but the Mustangs made a comeback in the singles.
Emerson, ranked 17th nationally, beat 45th ranked Nunez 6-2, 6-2 at number one, while Dillard defeated Beedy 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and Stegner downed Hicks 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.
ACU's Hudson beat van Swelm 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 as MSU maintained a 4-3 advantage.
But the Wildcats' Carsten came from behind to beat McKinney 7-5, 6-3 and Hawk defeat Villarreal 6-4, 6-3 as those matches ended simultaneously to give ACU it's fifth LSC crown in six years.
