OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The 29th-ranked Midwestern State University Mustangs men avenged a regular season loss to 14th ranked Cameron University by upending the Aggies 5-1 in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Thursday, but the MSU women dropped a 5-3 decision to Tarleton State in the opening round of the tournament.
The MSU men (10-8) entered the tournament seeded third, while Cameron (20-5) was the No. 2 seed.
MSU was led again by the All-American duo of Brett Emerson and Zac Dillard. The 22nd-ranked doubles squad beat Cameron's 10th-ranked duo of Tin Hinst and Jordi Mullor 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.
Emerson, ranked 17th in singles, then dispatched Hinst 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, while Dillard ripped Ignacio Murgier 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.
Travis Stegner was a part of the other two MSU triumphs, teaming with Stefan McKinney at No. 3 doubles to down Murgier and Daniel Graziani 8-4, then winning at No. 6 singles over Vitas Van Dijk 6-3, 6-1.
MSU will seek to defend it's 2006 LSC Championship at 9 a.m. on Friday against No. 28 Abilene Christian, a 5-0 winner in the other semifinal.
The No. 26-ranked Midwestern State women (17-9), seeded fifth, were doomed from the start after dropping all three doubles matches to the fourth-seeded TexAnns (19-10).
MSU came back to collect three singles wins as Faye d'Hamecourt defeated Stacey Benavides 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4,
Collean Kinser beat Jade Charlot 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 and
Melissa dos Prazeres-Silva beat Evgeniya Prokofeva 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
