WICHITA FALLS, Texas – St. Edward's University took a pair of matches from Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon, with the 13th-ranked Hilltoppers claiming a narrow 5-4 decision over the 29th-ranked Mustangs' men, while 17th ranked SEU women beat 26th-ranked MSU 5-1.
In the men's action, the Mustangs (8-8) claimed only one doubles point, and watched as the match was claimed when SEU's Justin Raiti beat MSU's John Suard 6-1, 7-6 in No. 5 singles.
MSU was paced by All-Americans Brett Emerson and Zac Dillard. The All-America doubles team ripped 21st-ranked Tyler Lyon and Jacob Walley 8-2. Both won their singles matches as well, with 17th-ranked Emerson beating No. 23 Walter Valarezo 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 and Dillard taking Jacob Walley 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 3. MSU also got a win at No. 6 singles as Travis Stegner downed Brett Powers 6-1, 6-2.
In the women's match the Mustangs lone point came at No. 1 doubles as
Cilia Muller and Ann-Sophie Indeherberge defeated Allison Paris and Janelle Otero 8-0.
St. Ed's claimed the other two doubles points and won the top three singles points to decide the match and end the contest with two other singles matches on the court and one not played.
The MSU men will be in action on Monday at Nebraska-Kearney, then will play Montana State-Billings on Wednesday in Arlington.
The Lone Star Conference Tournament is Thursday and Friday in Oklahoma City.
