MSU Men split Spring Break Tennis trip

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 18 Midwestern State went 2-2 against four nationally-ranked teams last week during a Spring Break trip to Missouri and Kansas.

The Mustangs defeated 39th ranked Northwest Missouri State 5-4 last Monday and 34th ranked Southwest Baptist (Mo.) 7-2 on the trip on Friday, but lost to No. 36 Washburn (Kan.) 5-3 last Sunday and to No. 4 Drury (Mo.) last Tuesday.

MSU stands at 7-4 on the dual season heading into Wednesday's showdown with No. 20 Abilene Christian at the MSU Tennis Center.

MSU got strong play from senior Brett Emerson.  The senior, ranked 14th nationally, went 3-1 for the week, losing only to 15th ranked Stefan Borg 6-4, 6-2.

Emerson teamed only once in the four matches with Zac Dillard, as the second ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II fell 8-3 to unranked Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plum of Washburn 8-3.

Emerson and Stefan McKinney joined to go 2-1 in the next two matches, losing only to Borg and Nikola Prpic of Drury 8-6.

Senior Chales van Swelm also posted a 3-1 week in singles, beating all by Drury's Antonio Garcia Santos.  Van Swelm split doubles matches, falling at Washburn with McKinney, but going 2-1 with Dillard.

The Mustangs, 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play this season, return to conference play with the ACU showdown.  Match time Wednesday is at 2:30 p.m. as both the men and women face the Wildcats at the MSU Tennis Center.
