COMMERCE, Texas – Chris Davis dropped in a game-high 23 points and added 12 rebounds to lead Midwestern State past Texas A&M-Commerce 71-59 here Saturday afternoon.
The Mustangs, who outrebounded the Lions 57-40 which resulted in a 22-6 second-chance point's advantage, claimed their second-straight win and improved to 3-4.
"That was the difference in the game," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "We didn't shoot the ball very well, but what we did do was guard the ball and rebound."
Midwestern State shot 36.6 percent from the field, but Davis led a strong effort on the boards and snagged seven of his 12 rebounds on the offensive end.
Senior
Christopher Reay paced the Mustangs by corralling 14 caroms, while junior forward
Trajinski Grigsby pulled down 12 rebounds.
It was that aggression on the glass that allowed the Mustangs to forge a 10-0 late in the second half after Texas A&M-Commerce needed just one minute of clock to pair a nine-point MSU lead to a 56-54 edge with 7:36 to play.
But
Jeremy Ford, who hit four of his nine 3-point attempts to finish with 15 points, got the Mustangs rolling with a trey from the corner to start a 10-0 Midwestern to push the lead to 66-54 with 2:53 to go.
And all of it was earned on the offensive glass as Grigsby hit a baseline jumper after the Lions' were unable to handle a rebound after an errant Ford 3-point attempt.
Davis would tip in his own miss in the lane before
Michael Godwin was fouled on his follow attempt of a missed driving layup attempt by Button.
"We handled the ball really well in the second half, shot free throws well and got a lot of stops," Ray said.
Midwestern State limited the Lions to 30.3 percent shooting from the field in the second half as they were only able to convert one of their 12 attempts from the arc.
But that 3-pointer came in the midst of a 7-0 run as Derrick Darkis got the rally started with the trey at the 8:43 mark.
The Lions' run answered a 10-2 volley by the Mustangs which was bookended by a pair of 3-pointers by Ford and Davis as MSU constructed a 56-47 advantage with 8:53 remaining.
Midwestern State now enjoys a nine-day break for finals and will return to action on Monday, Dec. 17 will it plays host to Incarnate Word. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
