SAN ANTONIO - Krissa Johnson paced Midwestern State with 20 kills as the Mustangs cruised to a 30-20, 25-30, 30-28 and 30-24 win Monday night at the McDermott Convocation Center.
The Mustangs, who improved to 25-4, clinched their best regular season record in school history while halting Incarnate Word's winning streak at nine.
"We needed a win against a good team and this was a great atmosphere," MSU coach
Venera Flores-Stafford said. "We're glad to get out of here with a win."
Incarnate Word had won 16 of its last 17, but dropped 20-8.
Junior outside hitter
Whitney Maxwell added 14 kills on the strength of a .294 attack percentage, while sophomore middle blocker
Alysha Pritt had 14 kills and added a team-high five total blocks.
Junior libero
Shay Velasquez paced the Mustangs with 24 digs and passed Mandy Pinkerton for the school single-season record for service aces. Velasquez finished the match with four and now has 68 this season.
Sophomore middle blocker
Sesley Graves had seven total blocks as the Mustangs limited the Cardinals to a .136 attack percentage with 13 total blocks.
Midwestern State will travel to Angelo State on Thursday before facing Abilene Christian on Saturday.
"We have to get all of them to go into the conference tournament (next week) on a streak," Flores-Stafford said. "We will be playing very competitive teams on the road. It will be a good warm-up for the conference tournament."
