Mustangs fall to No.15 West Texas A&M

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State looked to take a step up against No. 15 West Texas A&M Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

But the Lady Buffs limited the top attack in the Lone Star Conference to a .086 hitting night as the Mustangs fell 30-28, 30-24 and 30-23.

The Mustangs trailed early in game one 10-5, but reeled off seven of the next eight points and after an assisted block by Whitney Maxwell and Alysha Pritt and consecutive West Texas attack errors, the Mustangs led 12-11.

The lead quickly would exchange throughout the rest of the game. MSU was unable to seize the chance to take the opening game.

The Mustangs narrowed the margin 28-27 on a hard kill from Jessica Ransom, but an Allison Schreiber service miscue and a kill by WT's Laura Prinsen gave the Lady Buffs a 30-28 Game 1 win.

Midwestern would lead just once more in the remaining two games.

The Mustangs, whose .252 team attack percentage led the LSC coming in Thursday night, was limited to .086 as Sesley Graves was the lone player to hit better than .100.

The 6-1 middle blocker led MSU with eight kills while hitting .357 and added 4 blocks.

Graves was joined on the 10-block party by Pritt and Maxwell, who had six and five blocks, respectively.

Junior libero Shay Velasquez had 22 digs to help the Mustangs limit the Lady Buffs to a .140 hitting night. West Texas A&M was second on the LSC hitting chart at .231.

Junior setter Allison Schreiber had 31 assists to go with 12 digs and two blocks.

West Texas A&M was led by Laura Prinsen who had 13 kills, while Katie Rickwartz had 37 assists and Sara Contreras had 20 digs.

The loss snapped a nine game overall winning streak and a ten match home winning streak that dated back to a five game loss to Central Oklahoma on Oct. 14, 2006.

MSU fell to 23-4 on the season and 7-2 in conference, while West Texas A&M improved to 26-7 and 10-0.

The Mustangs, who have won 21 of their last 23, play host to Eastern New Mexico for Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m.
