WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State had the wind all of about 15 minutes Saturday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
But the Mustangs took advantage as
Ashli Smith converted the put away goal in the 58th minute, then MSU held on for a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over Northeastern State.
"It definitely affected the game," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "It was an emotional day and NSU just kept playing. You really have to give them credit. No lead is safe in this conference."
The emotions of Senior Day spilled over into the game as Trimble lauded the performances of
Brittany Burney,
Tory Broadhurst,
Melissa Brown and
Cassidy Guice.
"The seniors really played well," Trimble said. "I was really proud of the way they came out and kept the intensity."
It was Broadhurst, who had worked her way up the right wing from her defenders position in the 58th that took a serve from
Kendra Clemons and struck a great cross to the far post.
"That keeper (NSU's Patricia Nardy) was good and we had to get the ball to the back post," Trimble said.
Ashli Smith received the cross and headed into the crossbar, but the ball came down past the goal line to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute.
Northeastern State continued to scrap, buoyed by a change of wind direction early in the second half as the RiverHawks maintained the favorable defensive stance throughout most of the match.
NSU's Dani Watson claimed a misclear that was held up by the stiff breeze in the MSU box and converted it for her sixth goal of the season to narrow the deficit to 2-1 with 12 minutes to play.
"We gave them too many restarts late," Trimble said. "We need to protect the ball and not arrive so late and foul."
Brittany Subia had given Midwestern an early lead when she recovered a ball in the midfield, worked it down the left wing before beating Nardy to the far post in the 23rd minute.
The win wraps up a five-game homestand for the Mustangs, who went 4-1 during the stretch. MSU is now 10-3-2 on the season and 6-2 in conference.
The Mustangs close the regular season with a pair of road matches next weekend. MSU will face West Texas A&M on Friday and Eastern New Mexico on Sunday.
Northeastern State fell to 6-10-1 and 4-4.
