WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Christine Hornisher's goal in the 76th minute gave Texas Woman's a 1-0 upset over No. 24 Midwestern State Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Field.
"I was very impressed with Texas Woman's," MSU coach
Jeff Trimble said. "When we had the wind, we had some good opportunities and didn't finish."
The Mustangs, who outshot the Pioneers 19-11 for the game, were unable to convert on a pair of excellent chances before intermission.
Sophomore
Kari Bristow pinged the right post on a free kick from near the top of the vote in the 11th minute before Texas Woman's defender Chastity Hayter cleared a
Kat Bernick drive in the 30th minute as the teams battled to a scoreless first half.
"They are a good team and they played us well today," Trimble said. "If you keep a team around, they'll make you pay."
The Pioneers did in the 76th minute when Hayter chased down a through ball to the right wing and served a cross into the box. Hornisher headed pass from the near post and past MSU keeper
Heather Primavera to the far side of the net.
Midwestern worked a feverish final 10 minutes, but it was unable to tally the equalizer as sophomore
Katy Lukert had a running attempt on the right wing in the 84th minute, then floated a shot high in the 87th minute for MSU's two best looks.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 8-3-2 on the season and 4-2 in the Lone Star Conference, while Texas Woman's improved to 6-8-1 and 3-3.
Midwestern State is back in action next weekend as it plays host to East Central Friday at 7 p.m. and Northeastern State Sunday at 4 p.m.
