Northeastern State hands MSU Women 51-41 loss

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Midwestern State University Mustangs fought back from a 10-point second half deficit, but ran out of steam as the Northeastern State grabbed a 51-41 Lone Star Conference divisional crossover win Thursday night at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse.

MSU (7-7) trailed Northeastern State (9-5) 40-30 with 8:18 to play in the game when the Mustangs caught fire.

Freshman Andrea Buben buried a three that started an 11-1 run over the next five minutes and tied the game on Sonya Calhoun-Courtney's layup with 3:25 to go.

Little did the Mustangs know it would be their last score of the game.

Northeastern answered with a layup by Jonna Gordon then MSU could not buy a bucket.

NSU got another bucket from Gordon, then the Lady Reds hit 6-of-8 shots from the foul line down the stretch.

Midwestern was paced by Buben with 15 points and four rebounds, while Statcey Staten added nine points for MSU.  Calhoun-Courtney led MSU with five rebounds.

Northeastern State got a career-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Verressa Gaston and Lindsey Sams each had six as nine of the 10 Lady Reds scored in the contest.

Northeastern shot 40.9 percent from the floor, while MSU shot only 27.3 percent from the field for the game.  NSU dominated the boards, outrebounding the Mustangs 51-31.

MSU is on the road again Saturday afternoon in Edmond, Okla., as the Mustangs face Central Oklahoma to close divisional crossover play.
