WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Rachel Jackson made a break for the plate to score on Angelo State starter Rachel Walck to give the Midwestern State Mustangs a 2-1 win in Game 1 on Saturday's doubleheader at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
The Rambelles regrouped to run rule the Mustangs 8-0 in Game 2 as MSU starter
Ashley Kuchenski allowed a school record 15 hits as the teams split the non-divisional twin bill.
The No. 21-ranked Mustangs, now 34-9, return to LSC North Division play on Tuesday when they play host to Southwestern Oklahoma at 2 p.m. in a double dip at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
Angelo State catcher Cara Redmond appeared to block the plate but home plate umpire Clendon Cannon ruled Jackson safe to complete MSU's comeback over the Rambelles.
Walck had delivered six scoreless innings and Angelo led on the strength of Christel Neal's fifth home run of the season, but
Chantelle Lee scored on
Allison Tidwell's single after lacing a triple to right field to lead off the seventh.
Jackson walked to lead off the eighth, advanced to second on a wild pitch then to third on
Sarah Huddleston's sacrifice bunt before scoring on Walck's second errant pitch of the inning.
Brittany Willson improved to 21-5 and won her second decision over Walck. Both pitchers starred at Burkburnett High School.
Willson also tied her own school record with 16 strikeouts while allowing five hits and a walk. Walck (9-11) struck out six, walked three and allowed seven hits and two earned runs.
Stephanie Wardlaw and
Amanda Hill led the MSU with two hits apiece, while Angelo State leadoff hitter Kandace Kubat went 2-for-4.
Angelo State got multi-hit games from five different players and recorded a hit in each inning on its way to an 8-0 win in six innings of Game 2.
Rambelle starter Laura Baker held the Mustangs to six hits, walked none and struck out none to earn her second shutout of the season and improved to 5-2.
Angelo State posted single runs in the first and second innings before putting the game away with three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Jessica Rodriguez provided MSU with its lone bright spot by going 3-for3 at the plate with a double and a pair of singles.
Kuchenski, who fell to 13-4 on the season, yielded 15 hits and five earned runs, while striking out three and walking one.
