MSU uses overtime to beat Incarnate Word 75-73

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Midwestern State University senior guard Chad Rickett hit a running jumper with 2.4 seconds to play to lift the Mustangs to a 75-73 overtime victory over the University of the Incarnate Word Tuesday night.

MSU (3-0) held as much as a 16-point second half lead, only to see a valiant UIW (1-2) comeback to tie and send the game into overtime.

The Cardinals looked strong in the extra frame, gaining a 72-68 advantage, only to see MSU make the run late in the overtime, pulling out the winner on Rickett's runner.

Senior Drew Coffman led the way for MSU, leading all scorers with 23 points with four assists and four steals.  Rickett added 15 points in the victory.

Senior big man Eric Dawson collected 12 points and 11 rebounds with four blocked shots before fouling out of the contest.

Incarnate Word was paced by Jason Gant with 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Mikyl Bradshaw chipped in 13 points, Marcus Whitfield 12 and Chris Smith 10 with four assists.

Midwestern State outshot UIW 45 percent (31-of-69) to 41 percent (24-of-59), but the Cardinals hit 20-of-30 free throws to the Mustangs 7-of-11.

MSU is taking time off for the Thanksgiving holiday and won't return to action until Thursday, Nov. 30, when the men join the MSU women in hosting East Central (Okla.) in a Lone Star Conference crossover doubleheader at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.  The women will tip at 6 p.m., with the men following about 8 p.m. next Thursday.
