GOODWELL, Okla. – The Midwestern State University Mustangs never trailed in leading wire-to-wire to win their season-opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State 82-63 Thursday night in non-conference action.
MSU (1-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead over OPSU (1-1), the rolled out to a 16-4 lead in the first five and a half minutes, never giving the Aggies a chance to get back in the game.
MSU then started the second half with a 12-4 run, building a 22 point lead in with 14:39 to go and never looked back.
Midwestern was paced by the play of guard
Chad Rickett. The senior from Houston/Clear Lake led MSU with 19 points, while senior
Drew Coffman added 14 points with seven assists and senior
Eric Dawson collected his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocked shots.
Panhandle, that shot just 33.9 percent from the floor, was led by Luke Ogden with 14 points off the bench. He was the only OPSU player in double figures scoring. William Stephenson pulled down nine boards in a losing effort.
Midwestern State returns to Wichita Falls for Saturday's official home opener against Dallas Christian College. Tipoff at Gerald Stockton Court in D.L. Ligon Coliseum is at 7 p.m.
