GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Midwestern State University women capped a two-game trip to Colorado with a 2-1 victory over Mesa State (Colo.) Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.
MSU (5-5-1) got the game winner in the 63rd minute when junior
Brittany Burney got a feed from freshman
Katy Lukert for a one-on-one against the MSC goal keeper Kaitlyn Bennett. Burney blasted it past Bennett at the lower right corner to give MSU the lead it would not relinquish.
The shot came just four minutes after a defensive mistake allowed the match to be tied at 1-all. A free kick by MSC's Kira Brannan was misplayed by freshman
Amy Smith and got by MSU keeper Heather Premavera for an own goal.
Midwestern opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when freshman
Erin Torres put a shot in the high right corner of the goal off a pass from
Samantha Orer.
Premavera was nearly flawless in goal for the Mustangs, recording seven saves while facing 24 MSC shots. MSU recorded 27 shots against Bennett, who tallied nine saves and allowing two goals.
Midwestern State is back home against Thursday afternoon to face Texas Wesleyan in the first game of a women's/men's double header with the Rams. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field.
